I went out running this morning with an interval session programmed into my Garmin. If you aren’t a runner what that means is that my watch will beep at me after a period of time has elapsed, and I will alternate running fast or slow. The idea behind this is to build up your ability to run faster for longer.
My coach is pretty smart, and has trained some pretty good runners, and this session fits into his overall plan for me to take me to a sub 3 hour marathon.
My watch is pretty smart too. It can tell where I am in the world to plus or minus 10 metres. It can tell me how fast I’m running at any given time, what my heart rate is, how far I’ve run plus all sorts of other things that I have never used (although I had to get this watch because of the functionality!). It is also really good when used for interval sessions, because you just program it and away you go.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work properly when you don’t program it correctly.
So I was supposed to be running four hundred metres, followed by a slower two hundred metres to recover, and this was to be repeated eight times. But I was trying to do two things at once when I programmed it and was distracted. As a result I made an error so it only had two reps built in – after that, the session ended as far as the watch was concerned.
So now I have to keep running, save this session and start a new one, and change the intervals manually by constantly watching the elapsed distance.
The results of this were twofold:
- The results and reporting were inaccurate
- I was distracted, and my performance wasn’t optimal. As well as needing to focus on the faster runs, I also needed to monitor my watch to see when I could slow down.
In the end, a simple error in the implementation of this plan has meant I didn’t achieve what I should have.
