Why are you working?
I’ve spent the last 5 months working pretty hard. I’ve been juggling running my business with the negotiations and due diligence on the business I’ve just taken over. On top of this I’ve had study and exams to meet new professional requirements.
It’s been exciting but stressful, and I’ve struggled at times to clear my head.
While I’ve tried to leave it all at the office I know this didn’t happen. Unfortunately that meant I was distracted at home, less patient and irritable.
It’s always disheartening when you know you are giving less than the best of yourself to your family like this.
I’m sure you’ve been through times like this too.
One of the other consequences was that I didn’t have the energy (mental as much as physical) to find time to do one of the things I love – going for a run. Even when I did get out the door I found I was still so consumed with business that I couldn’t concentrate on running, and as a result it felt like hard work and I didn’t enjoy it.
Thankfully I knew this would be for a finite period, but I’ve seen some people operate in this environment for years at a time, with no end in sight.
It’s not until something happens to break that cycle that they realise how immersed they are – and often how unhappy they, and the people around them are too.
It’s why when people come and see us they’re forced to stop and ask themselves – why am I working? What is it that I want to get out of work – both for myself and my family?
Spending that time thinking is valuable – when did you last do this?
