“And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself-Well…How did I get here?”

I remember singing along to this as a kid thinking it was good fun. But I often sat there after the song day dreaming what my life would be like. I liked the sound of the beautiful house and the beautiful wife, and hoped I wouldn’t find out what the shot-gun shack was.
I hadn’t thought about this song for years, but I heard it recently and have had it stuck in my head. I still like it, but now that final question ‘How did I get here?’ is no longer the musing of a young boy imagining what his life will be like. It is now more a measure of how quickly 35 years has passed by since I first heard these lyrics.
I find myself again, day dreaming like that young boy, wondering what life will be like in the next 35 years.
And I am conscious that the question ‘How did I get here?’ can be tinged with regret or wonder depending on where you find yourself at the time.
You may have a clear idea of your destination. Or your focus could be on a place you are desperate to avoid.
Either way, you will need a plan to get you there.
