Living in The Moment with Denise Ferris
“You can not know what time it is, doesn’t matter, all the distracting stuff falls away, and you’re really present.”
Do you prioritise living life to the fullest? Our guest this week certainly does!
David is joined by Denise Ferris, the co-founder of World on Wheels, to discuss the importance of living in the moment, savouring the simple moments, and living your best life. World on Wheels is a touring business which she has run for 25 years with her husband Mike. Their mission is to help people tour the world on their motorbikes!
Former aspiring journalist and a lawyer, her day job nowadays revolves around living life to the fullest extent, and together with her husband, helping others experience that too.
Prior to teaming up for the joint business venture, she had a very corporate background, with lots of success in human resources and business side of things. But one common thing she notes is: “A lot of people do find as they become more senior in corporate that it doesn’t provide the meaning they’re looking for in life and their true values aren’t aligned with those of big organizations…”
The corporate world couldn’t satisfy her adventurous spirit and love of travel, which is the main reason that led to the creation of World on Wheels. The three-week tours hosted by Denise and Mike offer a different, unforgettable experience every time. “You know that as a rider you need to be really present - that’s the way to live life, and motorcycling encourages that.”
Denise also recommends a good read that influenced her a lot - “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance”. It’s a book that perfectly describes her philosophy of living in the moment: “What happens when you’re away travelling is you kind of connect with your best person. You become more open, more relaxed, more genuine, more curious… A whole lot of things that you naturally are, but kind of get covered up in day-to-day routine.”
David and Denise also discuss pressure and expectations in the touring line of business, the appreciation of the little things in life, connecting with others, but also realizing our own potential and doing what we can while we can.
Denise’s challenge for YOU for the next week: Ask yourself where in your life are you not feeling whole?
“Connect with your soul and listen to the answer, what’s one simple thing I could do today that would help me move towards that wholeness? - We often think it’s the big things… Grand gestures and choices, but our life is really made up of really simple choices every day.”
