Do you know Aunty Dot?
You might not, but I’m sure you know someone just like her.
She’s the person you always end up talking to at Christmas who provides you with an update on everyone they think you might know (however tangentially).
There’s Mark who you sat next to in the second grade – unfortunately he died of a heart attack last year.
You remember Emma, the girl you had a crush on in year 6? Well, her husband left her and the kids, just ran out on them. Bastard.
What about Brett, the strange kid who lived down the road and spent his life indoors on his Commodore 64 computer (flashback)? Hasn’t he done well for himself? A big company bought his little business in October and now he’s retired and gone sailing around the world.
I’ve not thought of these people in years, so talking to Aunty Dot reminds me that there is a world outside of my own little bubble.
It also reminds me that things happen in life, both good and bad.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day minutiae that we can lose sight of that and forget what is really important to us.
So before you get caught back up in the maelstrom, take some time to think about what you’d like to do with your year.
